Wishlist Wednesday #35

Sexy young Sheila Benton loses a multi-million dollar trust if she's involved in any scandal, so it probably would have been wiser not to do drugs, run around with a married man, and find a dead blackmailer on her kitchen floor. Defending her from a murder charge is a tough first case for attorney Steve Winslow, particularly since her trustee won't pay him, and he can't afford to quit his day job, driving a cab.


The Anonymous Client – What young attorney wouldn’t be delighted to get a $10,000 cash retainer in the mail? Steve Winslow might have been if he knew who sent it. As it is, it gets him arrested for murder, grilled by the cops, and hauled before the grand jury. And he still doesn’t know who his client is.




I was initially only going to select The Anonymous Client as my Wishlist Wednesday this week but its the second book in a series so I figured I'd include the first too as I'm likely to start from the beginning. At only 49p per book and good reviews all round I think I'll probably have them both on my to be read shelf sooner rather than later!

There's something about this book that intrigues me. Firstly I had to root around for this much of a description as the synopsis on the Kindle page was delightfully short. I haven't read any reviews for fear of spoilers though the editorial reviews are really good and make it sound like a good twisty thriller. I definitely want to add this to my TBR list!

Welcome to my thirtysecond Wishlist Wednesday which is part of the great blog hop hosted by Dani at Pen to Paper. I've been missing this weekly blog hop but have been a bit uninspired by my Kindle recently. I'm hoping this may get me going again! So this week I've chosen Borkmann's Point by Håkan Nesser

Borkmann’s rule was hardly a rule; in fact, it was more of a comment, a landmark for tricky cases . . . In every investigation, he maintained, there comes a point beyond which we don’t really need any more information. When we reach that point, we already know enough to solve the case by means of nothing more than some decent thinking. A seedy ex-con and a wealthy real-estate mogul are brutally murdered with an axe in the quiet coastal town of Kaalbringen. Chief Inspector van Veeteren, bored of his holiday nearby, is summoned to assist the local authorities. But there seems to be nothing to link the victims. Another body is discovered, again with no obvious connection, and the pressure mounts. The local police chief, just days away from retirement, is determined to wrap things up before he goes. Then there’s a fourth murder, and a brilliant young female detective goes missing – perhaps she has reached Borkmann’s Point before anyone else . . .

I haven't heard of this author or book before tonight when I started browsing through amazon, and I'm not sure how I got to it as it doesn't seem to be on any best seller lists, but it has some really good reviews and I'm interested to see how this Swedish author's work translates both in plot and setting.

As Barnwell Major Investigation Team struggle to resolve the mystery they are confronted with another gruesome discovery; the mummified remains of a teenage girl are unearthed from the slurry of a former colliery site. This corpse bears all the hallmarks of the first slaying and yet this body has been buried for well over a decade.
They soon realise that a savage killer is stalking Yorkshire, preying on young girls, and with the discovery of the bodies comes a series of revelations about the past.
For Detective Sergeant Hunter Kerr and his team, the race against time to prevent further murders is complicated by the fact that several of his men have been involved on the periphery of earlier crimes, without even knowing it. And as the death toll mounts as more bodies are unearthed and new victims succumb to the murderer’s sick appetites, he finds that this case comes very close to home.

Very close indeed...

I chose this book for a couple of reasons; firstly I was interested by the plot (many of you will recognise it's in my favourite genre!) but also it was set in Wombwell/Barsley which is very close to where I lived for several years. The reviews are very positive for this book and specifically mention how the location added to their overall enjoyment, especially if you have knowledge of the area and dialects. 

It's on offer at the moment at just £1.15 or $2.99 so I'm thinking this is going to make it's way onto my TBR pile sooner rather than later!

I'm temporarily wandering away from my usual thriller/mystery genre into as I'm in a bit of a lull reading-wise and think something like this that isn't so gruesome may be what I need to get reading again! The book is really well reviewed across the usual sites despite some concerns that it can be a little confusing to start off with. I'm definitely interested to give it a go. Also, I know the old saying 'never judge a book yahda-yada-yada' but I much prefer the English cover to the USA one!

With little in the way of leads and a journalist that seems to know more about the case than she does, Jessica is already feeling the pressure – and that’s before a second body shows up in identical circumstances to the first.
How can a murderer get to victims in seemingly impossible situations and what, if anything, links the bodies?



Dead bodies are piling up for Detective Sergeant Jessica Daniel. Usually when a serial killer is on the loose, the pressure would be building to find the perpetrator but the victims are all hardened criminals themselves. 
The national media can’t believe their luck with an apparent vigilante on the streets, while Jessica’s new boss seems grateful someone else is doing their job for them. 
But things aren't so straightforward when forensics matches blood from the apparent killer to a man already behind bars.


Ok, slightly unusually for me there's not one BUT TWO books on my list this week. Originally I was just going to write about Vigilante which is the second in the Jessica Daniel Series but I thought I'd look at the first for reference and really liked the sound of that one too! The descriptions don't give too much away along the lines of the other themes of the books and people involved, but if I like the protagonist I definitely think this sounds like a series I'd enjoy.

It's rare for a young woman to die from a stroke and when three such deaths occur in short order it starts to look like an epidemic. Then a sharp pathologist notices traces of benzodiazepine in one of the victim's blood samples and just traceable damage to the ligaments in her neck, and their cause of death is changed from 'natural' to murder.The police aren't making much progress in their hunt for the killer until he appears to make a mistake: Alison Willetts is found alive and D.I. Tom Thorne believes the murderer has made a mistake, which ought to allow them to get on his tracks. But it was the others who were his mistakes: he doesn't want to take life, he just wants to put people into a state where they cannot move, cannot talk, cannot do anything but think.When Thorne, helped by the neurologist looking after Alison, starts to realise what he is up against he knows the case is not going to be solved by normal methods - before he can find out who did it he has to understand why he's doing it.

I like the sound of this book a lot. It's got great reviews on amazon and sounds a bit out of the ordinary with the baddie trying to permanently trap people in their own bodies, unable to communicate rather than actually murder them. My only concern is the depiction of the protagonist who a few people mentioned falls into the typical worn out detective, divorced with a slight drinking problem. However I'm interested enough in the plot to want to find out what I think for myself!

Travis Knight is an extraordinary criminal defence attorney winning high profile cases in Atlanta. One of his recently acquitted clients kills again, which has Travis and his wife Julie, questioning what he does for a living. Travis is shaken to his core, but being a consummate lawyer, he is able to move past his feelings of guilt; Julie isn't.
In a bizarre twist, a mysterious vigilante begins executing Travis’ clients after he wins them an acquittal. This righteous vigilante decides that the clients Travis is helping to put back into society are guilty, and don't deserve to live--the vigilante delivers ultimate justice.
The police only half-heartedly search for the vigilante-off the record, they are glad someone is cleaning-up after the hot-shot attorney.
The vigilante's attention turns to the source, and sends Travis an ultimatum--stop defending guilty clients or he will be the next to be executed. Risking his life, and his marriage, Travis refuses to be intimidated, and continues to defend clients accused of murder.

This story chronicles the labyrinth of high-speed twists and turns of a deadly cat-and-mouse game - a game that can end with only one winner

So first things first... I'm guilty of judging books by their covers and this one doesn't exactly grab my attention very much, though thankfully the synopsis does as it sounds like the perfect mix... dark legal/mystery/thriller... my favourite genres all combined! I'm sure it won't be long before this book joins my kindle TBR list.

Call that number. If I have not heard from you by 8:00 P.M., the police will receive an anonymous call. I'll tell them where Rita Jones is buried on your property, how you killed her, and where the murder weapon can be found in your house. (I do believe a paring knife is missing from your kitchen.) I strongly advise against going to the police, as I am always watching you.

Why this book? I love the sound of it and though it has legal thriller links it does not seem to be based in the courtroom. However it's going to be a love or hate thing depending on whether I connect with the protagonist or if her 'wise cracking' tenacity gets on my nerves!

I've recently finished what I was reading and seeing as it's my birthday, I'm going to treat myself and get this on my Kindle today :D

So begins a courtroom drama in which Cadogan seeks to manipulate the judicial process whilst his beautiful Junior Council, Naomi Nicholas watches in horror as he tries to reduce the truth to an irrelevance. Who wins? Truth, blackmail corruption or justice?

Why this book? I've never read anything by this author before and just stumbled across this book while pottering around Amazon (as you do!). I like the sound of it and it's well reviewed too. It looks like it's on offer at the moment which is a bonus so I think I might be investing in it for my TBR pile..

Why this book? I've just finished the first book with this protagonist 'The Colour of Law' and even though it was totally far fetched I really enjoyed it. I'm interested to see where the author goes with this book and the character progression.
